The Skies are Telling the Story

by MaryAnn Nguyen-Kwok on September 03, 2021

The heavens declare the glory of God;
    the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
    night after night they reveal knowledge.
Psalm 19:1-4

The other day while I was on a walk, I turned a corner in the road and discovered a rainbow in the sky. The rainbow breaking through the clouds felt like God breaking hope into my thoughts as the Spirit reminded me that “God is able.”

I love that God speaks through rainbows, and through wispy clouds in the sky, falling stars, and lightning strikes. When we look up, God’s Spirit speaks to our spirit in surprising ways. This is attested in Scripture in Psalm 19, which tells us that day after day and night after night, the heavens are communicating messages to us about who God is. The revelations are continuous. The epiphanies are ongoing. The broadcast is non-stop. The skies never cease to offer us more knowledge of the greatness of our God. Through the heavens, God is being uncovered and unveiled.

Day after day, night after night, in the morning, in the evening, and all the time, the skies are telling the story of our God.

So, if we long for more revelation and more knowledge, look up, for the heavens are a pathway to God.

In light of this, this morning, as you begin your day, I invite you to step outside, take a deep breath, and bask in the sunlight. Reflect on how the sun faithfully and consistently rises and sets every single day, a continuous provision from God. The sun gives us warmth and makes things grow. Its faithfulness reveals God’s faithfulness and love. So, as you stand out in the warm sun and soak in God’s love and faithfulness, I encourage you to allow gratitude to rise to the surface, and let that be your offering to God as you start your day.

Then, in the evening, as you end your day, go outside again and look up at the night sky. What do you see? Take in the stunning stars and moon. Contemplate the multitude of stars. What story about God are they telling you? Let their grandeur fill you with awe and draw you into a time of worship.
