Dear Friends,
I know many of us are deeply disappointed by what appears to be a deep disregard for the needs of the poor and the immigrant in our nation in this time. This week, I have been reading in the book of James and am reminded that God sees all things and will right all things in due time. What follows are some very harsh words. The New Testament speaks often of the great love of God for humanity. But it also speaks a strong warning to the wealthy who seek to serve themselves rather than to help those around them. James gives such a warning here, along with words of encouragement to those who are suffering, reminding them that the Lord is coming to their aid in time.
“Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.
“Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!
“Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.”
James 5:1-11 (NIV)
For those who are discouraged, wait. This is not the end. Greed and corruption will not have the last word. And for those who have been concerned for themselves and for their own family and friends at the expense of the poor and the immigrant, turn around now while you still can.
A prayer for today:
God, forgive me for the ways I have chosen myself instead of others. Free me from the fear of not having enough. Help me to use the resources you have given me according to your will and your purposes. Make me an advocate and a friend to those in need. When you come, Jesus, let me be counted among your friends as well. Amen.
Love in Christ,
Michelle
