The Nearness of God

by MaryAnn Nguyen-Kwok on August 27, 2021

“But as for me, the nearness of God is my good; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all Your works” (Psalm 73:28, NASB 1995).

There are a lot of injustices in this world. The psalmist in Psalm 73 shares honestly and bluntly about some of the unfair things that he sees. Mostly, he feels discouraged and bitter because it seems like the arrogant and the wicked have success and abundance. But after his candid expression of his feelings, he “entered the sanctuary of God” and received God’s perspective (73:17). The psalmist realizes that no matter what the situation is, no matter what tumult and unfairness, no matter what injustices there are, the nearness of God is his good. I find this declaration to be truly anchoring. It’s good that God is near us. It’s good that God is present. God is our anchor. God is our refuge. God restores our soul and revives us. God holds us close and holds us fast. We are protected and safe and watched over. We are loved and beloved.

In these tumultuous times, I pray that the truth of his nearness be good and healing for you today.
