No Words Required

by MaryAnn Nguyen-Kwok on September 17, 2021

“The heavens declare the glory of God…

They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.”  Psalm 19:1, 3-4.

Whether we believe in a God who created all things or not, most of us, at one time or another, have stopped and stared at a glorious sunset, a monolithic mountain, or a sky filled with shining stars. In those moments, we are all made into philosophers as we wonder about the intricacies of creation and our comparative smallness. We’re inspired to entertain the possibility of something greater than ourselves. And all of this happens without the heavens speaking one single word. The heavens do not make any actual sounds, and yet their message of God’s glory and goodness goes out into all the earth in resounding ways. It’s heard. It’s understood. And it makes me wonder how I, too, might live my life in such a way that my posture and behavior could cause others to see God. How can I embody my loving Creator so that others would ponder the possibility of God’s existence? I see value in this, because I do believe in a God who created all things good who is worth knowing personally, and there are many contexts in which I’ll never have the opportunity to speak–where people might observe my life at a distance and yet never converse with me. This week, I am feeling especially inspired to seek–in greater measure–to demonstrate the love of God without speaking a word.

Join me as I pray: God, let my words be few and my loving actions be more. Help me live so in step with the Spirit that others are able to see you–the great God of love and goodness.
